Acorn BBC Micro Model B: Floppy upgrade with 177x_B Issue 1 and WD1772 (including Gotek)

Background

My BBC Micro Model B was in use without a working floppy drive. Typically, many Model B systems would have had an Intel 8271 installed as the floppy controller – but in my computer, there was nothing active that I could simply have carried over. So I effectively started from scratch and wanted to retrofit floppy drive support properly.

This is exactly what the 1770/1772 upgrade is designed for: it replaces or bypasses the original controller logic and instead introduces a controller from the WD177x family, complete with DFS-ROM, into the system. The WD1772 supports double-density operation and, compared to the older WD1770, is the better choice for reliable day-to-day use.

The kit: 177x_B Issue 1 with WD1772 and DFS 2.26

The module used is designated 177x_B Iss 1, fitted with a WD1772 and a ROM containing DFS 2.26. The kit also included two 74LS38 ICs, which are also required for installation.

Frogger RX ist das letzte Spiel der Midnight Brew Collection 2025 und das einzige, bei dem Entwickler und Publisher ein und dieselbe Person sind: Allan Turvey, der als happycodingzx die Kollektion herausgibt, hat sein eigenes Spiel in seine eigene Collection aufgenommen. Das klingt nach Eigentor, ist in Wirklichkeit aber ein Qualitätsbeweis. Wer jahrelang die besten Spectrum-Homebrews anderer Entwickler auf Kassette bringt, legt bei seinem eigenen Beitrag die Latte entsprechend hoch.

Memory cards for the Atari Portfolio: original cards, program cards and my backup workflow

For me, the Atari Portfolio is one of those computers that only feels ‘complete’ when it’s accompanied by the right accessories. And that clearly includes the cards for the side slot. In my collection, I have four variants: the original memory cards with 32 KB, 64 KB and 128 KB – as well as a no-name card with 512 KB. Also, whilst putting this article together, I remembered that I also have an original program card labelled “FileManager/Tutorial”. It is precisely this mix that beautifully illustrates how Atari envisaged the Portfolio concept back then: memory for working – and software to plug in.

Midnight Brew Collection 2025, Part 4: Gorf

An arcade classic with a penchant for big talk.

Gorf hit arcades in February 1981—developed by Dave Nutting Associates and published by Midway Manufacturing. The name is an acronym: Galactic Orbiting Robot Force. And read backward, it spells "Frog"—the nickname of lead developer Jamie Fenton. That, in itself, says a great deal about the spirit of the game.

Gorf was historically significant for two reasons. First, it is considered one of the very first arcade games to feature synthesized speech—a Votrax SC-01 chip allowed the Gorfian robot to taunt the player throughout the entire game. "Your end draws near." "You will meet a Gorfian doom!" In 1981, that was a real statement. Second, Gorf was the first arcade game to feature multiple levels—five different game modes on a single machine—which, at the time, gave it the image of a five-game package available as a single purchase.

Tecra 8100 fully kitted out – business laptop becomes a Windows 98 gaming machine

Sometimes just the right item turns up in the collection: in this case, a Toshiba Tecra 8100 (PT810E-029F1-TK) including a 10/100 network port replicator, Expansion Station, several SelectBay drives, an external 3.5″ floppy drive, a USB keyboard, Monitor Stand PA3021U-1OTA and a Xircom network card.

This means that virtually the entire range of docking stations and accessories that Toshiba offered its business customers around the year 2000 is now available. With 512 MB RAM and Windows 98 SE, this provides the ideal foundation for a typical Win98 gaming PC from the turn of the millennium – only in notebook form.

Midnight Brew Collection 2025, Teil 2: Lock’n’Chase

Ein Klassiker ohne Spectrum-Port

Lock’n’Chase erschien 1981 in den Spielhallen – entwickelt von Data East Corporation, kurz DECO, die in den frühen Achtzigern mit einer ganzen Reihe solider Arcade-Titel von sich reden machten. Das Spiel fand seinen Weg auf diverse Heimsysteme der Zeit, darunter den Mattel Intellivision. Was es bis heute nie gab: eine offizielle Umsetzung für den ZX Spectrum. Bob Smith hat das 2025 geändert – und das Ergebnis landete direkt in der Midnight Brew Collection.

Konzept

Ihr spielt Lupin, einen Dieb, der durch die Korridore eines Banktresors navigiert. Das Ziel ist denkbar einfach: alle Münzen einsammeln und zur Ausgangstür gelangen. Klingt unkompliziert. Wird es aber nicht, denn vier Polizisten namens Super D sind euch ständig auf den Fersen. Die Ähnlichkeiten zu Pac-Man sind offensichtlich – Labyrinth, Verfolger, Sammelaufgabe – aber Lock’n’Chase hat seinen eigenen Dreh. Lupin kann Türen hinter sich schließen und so die Verfolger kurzzeitig abblocken. Das ist der entscheidende taktische Unterschied, der aus einem simplen Katz-und-Maus-Spiel etwas mit echtem Tiefgang macht.

Midnight Brew Collection 2025, Teil 1: Space Invaders

Wer physische Releases für den ZX Spectrum sammelt, kommt an der Midnight Brew Collection nicht vorbei. Seit 2022 veröffentlicht Allan Turveys Label jährlich eine limitierte Zusammenstellung moderner Homebrew-Spiele auf Kassette – ausschließlich in Assembly geschrieben, ausschließlich für die echte Hardware gedacht, und stets in einer Sammlerbox. Die 2025er Edition bringt fünf Kassetten mit insgesamt sechs Titeln: Wycheweald und Hafoc Tor von Nico Scheltema teilen sich dabei eine. Und weil ich alle im Original besitze, starte ich hiermit eine Artikelreihe, in der jedes Spiel der Collection sein Review bekommt. Den Anfang macht ein alter Bekannter.

KrappyGamez, der Entwickler hinter diesem kleinen Shoot’em-up-Juwel aus dem Jahr 2022, weiß genau, was er tut. Und das Ergebnis ist ehrlicher Spielspaß in bester Spectrum-Manier.

Alles, was ein Shooter braucht – und nichts darüber hinaus

Yet Another Krappy Shooter ist ein horizontaler Endlos-Shooter für den ZX Spectrum 16K. Das ist richtig gelesen: 16K. Kein 48er, kein 128er – 16 Kilobyte. Was sich nach einer technischen Einschränkung anhört, ist in Wirklichkeit eine Art Designcredo: kein Schnickschnack, keine Ablenkung, nur das Wesentliche.

Atari Portfolio – my DOS handheld from the 90s (and why it still fascinates today)

Whenever I write an article about the Atari Portfolio, I’m struck by just how quickly time flies. I actually owned the device myself back then – bought it (like so many things) quite simply from Quelle – and used it extensively in the 90s. And yet, so far there is only one short post on my blog, dating from 2012:

Back then, I barely managed to form more than a fleeting impression. Today, I’d like to make up for that and describe the Portfolio as it deserves: as a device that packed ‘real everyday PC use’ into a format you could actually take with you on the go.

A handheld computer that wasn’t actually an Atari

What many people don’t know is that the hardware design and ROM software (BIOS, DOS, shell and the complete PIM applications) were originally not developed by Atari. The technical basis came from DIP Research Ltd. in the UK, which had previously demonstrated a ‘Pocket PC’ as a proof of concept. Atari licensed this platform and turned it into a market-ready product.

Mit RetroQuest II: Las Torres de la Desesperación legt Mauri Fernández, auch bekannt als MisterManiac, 2022 einen Nachfolger zu seinem ersten Spectrum-Spiel aus dem Jahr 2016 vor. Das Ergebnis ist ein solider, anständig umgesetzter Plattformer – mit bekannten Stärken und ebenso bekannten Schwächen.

Die Geschichte – so weit es eine gibt

Das Ziel ist klar: Erklimmt den goldenen Turm und sichert euch den Schatz, der euch angeblich alles geben kann, was ihr euch wünscht. Mehr Story gibt es nicht, und das ist auch völlig in Ordnung. RetroQuest II ist ein Spiel, das seine Karten von Anfang an offen auf den Tisch legt. Ihr sammelt, ihr springt, ihr weicht aus – und das Spiel funktioniert genau auf dieser Ebene.

Bomb Bomb Buster

Manchmal braucht ein Spiel keine Geschichte. Keine Prinzessin in Not, kein episches Abenteuer, kein langatmiges Intro. Manchmal reicht es vollkommen, wenn der Entwickler sagt: „Es gibt nur Dynamit.” Genau das ist das Konzept hinter Bomb Bomb Buster, einem Plattformer von Packobilly aus dem Jahr 2022 – und es funktioniert überraschend gut.

Kein Skript. Nur Dynamit.

Die Prämisse ist denkbar einfach: Schnapp dir die Bombe und jag sie dem Endgegner namens „The Big Fat” entgegen. 25 Level, jede Menge Feinde, ein fieser Boss – fertig. Packobilly macht keinerlei Hehl daraus, dass Bomb Bomb Buster kein Storytelling-Wunder sein will. Stattdessen konzentriert sich das Spiel auf das, was Spectrum-Klassiker der frühen 80er so gut konnten: ein knallhartes, auf den Punkt gebrachtes Spielprinzip, das unter die Haut geht.
