Atari ST(E)/Mega ST(E)

In 1989, just as the Commodore Amiga, Apple's Macintosh, and x86 PCs were on the verge of overtaking the four-year-old Atari ST, the Atari 1040 STE was introduced. The number of displayable colors increased from 512 to 4,096, while the maximum number of colors that could be displayed simultaneously per resolution remained the same. The system now offers two additional controller ports and an external stereo output, allowing the STE to be connected to a hi-fi system or an amplifier. The operating system was improved and initially shipped as version 1.06, but due to a serious bug, it was soon replaced by TOS 1.62. Thanks to SIMM modules, the RAM can now be upgraded much more easily. The blitter—a bit block transfer chip already used in the Mega ST—was built in as standard and significantly speeds up graphics output.
