APF-02 USB-Card-Reader [Atari Portfolio]

Following the recently introduced APF-01, the APF-02 USB Card Reader has now arrived—an exciting new piece of hardware that allows classic Atari Portfolio memory cards (32K, 64K, and 128K) to be read directly on a PC.

Previously, in my opinion, this was only possible using the Atari PC Card Drive, a specialized piece of hardware connected via an ISA card in a DOS-based PC. However, this setup is hardly practical nowadays, as the necessary PCs are no longer widely available. The APF-02 fills this gap, solving one of the key challenges that many Portfolio users still face today: How do I get software onto the Portfolio?

A Look Back: Previous Solutions

In earlier articles, I have already presented several methods for exchanging data between the Atari Portfolio and modern systems:

The APF-01 already introduced a major innovation by offering a memory card with a capacity of up to 2 MB. With the APF-02, using original Atari Portfolio memory cards is now practical once again—a real boon for collectors and users alike!

Hardware and Software: Simple and Effective

The APF-02 USB card reader connects directly to your PC via USB and works with the apfRAM Utility software. To read and write cards, you need at least version 2.0 of the tool, which is available on the apfRAM website. You can also order the hardware itself there—the price is approximately 70 euros, plus shipping from Greece.

Using the software is no different from using the APF-01. If you’ve read my review of that, you’ll quickly find your way around.

The heart of this hardware is a Xilinx CPLD (Complex Programmable Logic Device) designated R3064XL. However, this component appears to be no longer in production.

Conclusion: A major step forward for Atari Portfolio users

The APF-02 USB card reader offers a modern solution to an old problem, finally making the use of classic Atari Portfolio memory cards practical for everyday use again. This device is a must-have, especially for collectors who rely on original hardware.

Thanks to its simple setup, software availability, and support from the apfRAM community, the APF-02 is a well-designed addition for any Atari Portfolio enthusiast. For those who wish to continue using the Portfolio regularly, it offers a straightforward way to exchange data easily and reliably.

Note
Using the correct USB cable (data or charging-only) is important. In my case, the APF-02 was detected, but the Pofo's memory card was not. At first, I thought this might be due to the weak battery. However, even after replacing the battery and formatting the memory card, it still didn't work.
When I tested a different micro-USB cable, the memory card was finally detected. From that point on, there were no further issues.

If you’ve already had experience with the APF-02, let me know—I’m curious to hear your feedback!
