The Sinclair ZX Spectrum, a British home computer, was released by Sinclair Research Ltd. in 1982. It ranks among the most influential computers in history and, with over five million units sold, is one of the best-selling British computers. The ZX Spectrum was developed by the English entrepreneur and inventor Sir Clive Sinclair and his team in Cambridge. The goal was to create a small, simple, and—above all—affordable computer using minimal components. The name "Spectrum" was chosen to highlight its color display, contrasting with the black-and-white display of its predecessor, the ZX81. Its distinctive case, rainbow motif, and rubber keyboard were designed by Rick Dickinson. Video output was provided via a television set, while software was loaded and saved using compact audio cassettes. Initially distributed via mail order, the ZX Spectrum was later sold through retail chains across the United Kingdom. In the USA, it was known as the Timex Sinclair 2068, and in parts of Europe as the Timex Computer 2048. A total of seven ZX Spectrum models were produced, ranging from the 1982 base model with 16 KB of RAM to the 1987 ZX Spectrum +3, which featured 128 KB of RAM and a built-in floppy disk drive. The ZX Spectrum competed primarily with the Commodore 64, the BBC Micro, the Dragon 32, and the Amstrad CPC series. Over 24,000 different software titles were released for the ZX Spectrum. Its market launch triggered a boom in software and hardware production, the effects of which are still felt today. As one of the first home computers aimed at a mass audience, it is often regarded as a catalyst for the British IT industry.
