New input devices for the Sharp MZ-700: Sharp-Pad & joypad adapter from You Make Robots
Joysticks and the Sharp MZ-700 are a story in themselves, as the computer lacks the standard Atari-compatible ports. Sharp specialist You Make Robots offers two solutions to address this issue: the Sharp-Pad and the Digital Joypad Adapter for Sharp MZ-700.
🔘 Sharp-Pad (analog)
The Sharp-Pad is a modern replacement for the original MZ-700 joystick. It is based on contemporary components and features the correct connector for the computer's dedicated joystick port, making it fully compatible with games originally developed for the original stick.
My photo shows the older version of the Sharp Pad; the design has since been revised. A port extender is also available, allowing two pads to be connected simultaneously—for example, for two-player games.
Some compatible games are listed on the You Make Robots product page.
💷 Cost incl. port extender: £35

🔘 Digital Joypad Adapter (for Atari/Sega controllers)
This small adapter is housed in a 3D-printed case and allows controllers with Atari/Sega-compatible 9-pin connectors—such as Sega Mega Drive / Genesis joypads—to be connected to the MZ-700.
It is important that the controller used has two independent fire buttons connected to pins 6 and 9. Only then can the adapter function correctly.
Unlike other solutions, no modification of the game files is necessary—simply plug in and get started.
💷 Cost: £25
