RadPad Controller [Vectrex]

RadPad Controller [Vectrex]

Over the past few years, I kept coming across the RadPad controller for the Vectrex console, but I never quite managed to place an order. Since this controller is usually offered in the Vectrex Facebook group rather than through a standard online store, it is easy to miss out on it. In 2024, I finally succeeded—Oliver Radford from England sent me a unit.

However, this bit of fun doesn't come cheap: €135 is a hefty price tag for an accessory of this kind. Yet anyone who has ever looked for an original controller knows you’d practically have to pawn a kidney to afford one.

The analog stick is significantly larger than the original. This isn't an issue for users with large hands, but for others, it might feel too big. Of course, that is a matter of personal preference—much like the button layout. The buttons are arranged in a curve, which can feel unfamiliar at first, especially when a game requires the use of all four. Some players prefer a horizontal layout, but you can't please everyone. In any case, the product photos clearly show what to expect.

If this sounds a bit critical so far - don't worry! Here come the positive aspects:

  • Very good build quality
  • Successful, professional design
  • Rapid response from the joystick and buttons
  • Precise analog stick
  • Excellent alternative to the original controller
  • Pleasantly long cable

After my initial tests, I can confidently say: I prefer the RadPad to the original controller. Games are more precise to control and feel better overall. While the stick has a slightly longer travel, it doesn't feel sluggish at all – quite the opposite! I was particularly impressed by the accuracy, making the RadPad a great alternative for all Vectrex fans.
