DaemonClaw – Magical Fists for the Mega Drive 💥
A Homebrew Project with Big Ambitions
In 2025, DaemonClaw: Origins of Nnar arrived as a particularly ambitious homebrew game for the Sega Mega Drive. It was developed by the indie studio BitBeamCannon, whose team includes pixel-art veterans such as Michael Parent and Corey Annis. For the technical implementation, they brought in support from Neofid Studios – the creators of Demons of Asteborg – and released the game in cooperation with PixelHeart.
The Kickstarter campaign in the autumn of 2023 quickly became a success, securing a release across multiple platforms: Mega Drive, Neo Geo, and PC. Each platform even features its own exclusive character—a real treat for collectors and fans.
A classic fantasy setting with unique quirks
The story is set in the fantasy world of Nnar, which has been overrun by the aggressive Zverkin armies. As the knight Elrik Ironfist, the player acquires a magical artifact—the titular DaemonClaw—and must fight their way through several regions to defeat the invaders' commanders.
In this endeavor, the hero has at their disposal not only raw strength but also various magical abilities. In each section, a unique boss awaits with distinct attack patterns—and a special magical artifact to be collected upon victory.

Technology at its finest – on real hardware 🕹️
DaemonClaw ranks among the most technically impressive homebrew titles for the Mega Drive:
- Graphics: Detailed pixel art, fluid animations, and rich colors demonstrate what is possible on the Mega Drive.
- Sound: The soundtrack is by none other than Allister Brimble, who has composed music for numerous Amiga classics.
- Controls: The moveset is surprisingly extensive—Elrik can roll, parry, execute uppercuts, and even destroy enemies' shields. A short tutorial makes getting started easier.
- Second playable character: On the Mega Drive, you can unlock Gareth from Demons of Asteborg – exclusively on this platform.
Particularly exciting: The game features a Tag-Team Mode, in which two players can compete cooperatively or take turns controlling the heroes.

A Physical Release with Style 📦
The physical version was shipped in the summer of 2025 and includes a beautifully designed cartridge, classic-style color packaging, and a manual. Additionally, a Steam key is included, which also unlocks the PC version. The Neo Geo version is limited to 300 copies for the AES and was also released for the MVS.
All versions are region-free and run on both PAL and NTSC devices. Thus, DaemonClaw offers the full retro experience on original hardware—entirely without emulation.
An Impression on the Scene—Brief, Yet Powerful
The retro community was overwhelmingly positive. The visual presentation and the music, in particular, received frequent praise. The combat system, with its tactical possibilities, was also well received.
There was some scattered criticism regarding the high difficulty—even on lower settings—as well as the relatively short runtime of the main campaign. Nevertheless, the online magazine Time Extension, for instance, described the game as an “impressive package” and awarded it 8 out of 10 points.

Conclusion 🧤
DaemonClaw is an impressive example of how vibrant and innovative the homebrew scene can still be, even 30 years after the peak of the 16-bit era. Anyone who loves action platformers with a fantasy setting will get their money's worth here – especially if they have the chance to experience the game on original hardware.
A true highlight for collectors, fans, and retro gamers!
