Typically, many Model B systems would have had an Intel 8271 installed as the floppy controller \u2013 but in my computer, there was nothing active that I could simply have carried over. So I effectively started from scratch and wanted to retrofit floppy drive support properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is exactly what the 1770\/1772 upgrade is designed for: it replaces or bypasses the original controller logic and instead introduces a controller from the WD177x family, complete with DFS-ROM, into the system. The WD1772 supports double-density operation and, compared to the older WD1770, is the better choice for reliable day-to-day use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The kit: 177x_B Issue 1 with WD1772 and DFS 2.26<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The module used is designated <strong>177x_B Iss 1<\/strong>, fitted with a <strong>WD1772<\/strong> and a ROM containing <strong>DFS 2.26<\/strong>. The kit also included two <strong>74LS38<\/strong> ICs, which are also required for installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tools used:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>screwdriver<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fine-toothed tweezers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>IC extractor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Testing device (to check whether S9 is actually disconnected)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Installation: step by step<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When installing the module, it is important not only to plug in the controller module, but also to follow all the steps carefully \u2013 missing jumpers or unbroken traces will later lead to malfunctions that are difficult to diagnose.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acorn-BBC-Micro-Model-B-Platine-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Acorn BBC Micro Model B - Platine\" class=\"wp-image-41125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acorn-BBC-Micro-Model-B-Platine-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acorn-BBC-Micro-Model-B-Platine-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acorn-BBC-Micro-Model-B-Platine-16x12.jpg 16w, https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acorn-BBC-Micro-Model-B-Platine.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Acorn BBC Micro Model B \u2013 Initial situation: before the conversion \u2013 no extra ROMs \u2013 no disk system<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">IC79 and IC80: Using two 74LS38 chips<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">First, insert the two <strong>74LS38<\/strong> into the designated sockets <strong>IC79<\/strong> and <strong>IC80<\/strong>. These logic ICs ensure that the floppy signals are processed correctly. Without them, the system may freeze or behave unpredictably when accessing the drive. I had two options available to me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Acorn DFS 2.26<\/strong> \u2013 the official Acorn implementation for the WD177x controller<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Watford DFS W1.54<\/strong> \u2013 a third-party implementation by Watford Electronics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">I opted for <strong>Acorn DFS 2.26<\/strong> as I was unaware of the differences compared to the Watford ROM. The most significant difference is that Watford DFS supports up to <strong>62 files per disk<\/strong> instead of the usual 31 with Acorn DFS \u2013 though this is achieved through a proprietary, non-standard catalogue format. This means that a floppy disk written with Watford DFS can only be read to a limited extent by a system running Acorn DFS, and in the worst case, the Watford catalogue may be damaged if Acorn DFS overwrites structures it does not recognise. For normal day-to-day use and compatibility with common <code>.SSD<\/code> and <code>.DSD<\/code> images, Acorn DFS 2.26 is the simpler and safer choice. IC87 is located at the top left, directly below the unpopulated Econet area. This is exactly where the two points were that had initially been connected incorrectly \u2013 and which had caused the computer to simply freeze after <code>*CAT<\/code>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong>1. Jumper on IC87 (pins 9\u201312)<\/strong><br>A jumper must be installed between pins 9 and 12. Without this connection, the controller does not return the expected READY signal after drive access \u2013 resulting in a freeze after <code>*CAT<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong>2. Disconnect S9<\/strong><br>The conductor path to <strong>S9<\/strong> must be disconnected. This step is necessary because, otherwise, S9 will keep a signal path from the old 8271 design active and interfere with the new controller. The standard formats are <code>.SSD<\/code> (single-sided) and <code>.DSD<\/code> (double-sided) \u2013 both can be copied directly to the Gotek USB stick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Switching between filing systems<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only one filing system is active at any one time on the BBC Micro. When using floppy disks, you must therefore switch between them manually:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Command<\/th><th>Function<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td class=\"translation-block\"><code>*DISC<\/code> (or <code>*DISK<\/code>)<\/td><td>Switch to DFS 2.26<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><code>*TAPE<\/code><\/td><td>Switch to cassette mode<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><code>*DISK<\/code> is simply an alias for <code>*DISC<\/code> \u2013 both forms are valid. If several file system ROMs are installed in the system at the same time (e.g. MMFS and DFS), <code>*DISC<\/code> may seem unexpected. It is always worth knowing which file system is currently active.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gotek with FlashFloppy 3.44<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">I had already been using the Gotek with the BBC Master. I took the opportunity to update the firmware to <strong>FlashFloppy 3.44<\/strong> \u2013 which provides a more robust foundation than older versions, particularly when it comes to USB sticks and folder navigation.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gotek-Platine-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Gotek - Platine\" class=\"wp-image-41126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gotek-Platine-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gotek-Platine-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gotek-Platine-16x12.jpg 16w, https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Gotek-Platine.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Gotek &#8211; Platine<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">DFS: No directories as on a PC<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">DFS does not use a directory structure like modern systems. Instead, it uses a single-letter prefix \u2013 for example, <code>A.PROGRAM<\/code> or <code>G.GAME<\/code>. This still allows a floppy disk or an image to be organised in a logical way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 177x_B upgrade with WD1772 is a technically fascinating and, in practice, very useful retrofit for the BBC Micro Model B. It is crucial to complete the installation in full \u2013 not just to plug in the controller module. In my case, it took several steps, which together made the system stable:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Install the 74LS38 in IC79 and IC80<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Place a bridge on IC86<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Install the WD1772 module in the IC78<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set the jumper on IC87 (pins 9\u201312)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disconnect the S9 and check it with a meter<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After that, access was stable \u2013 initially verified with the Cumana 5\u00bc\u201d drive, and subsequently with the Gotek as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Appendix: FF.CFG for the Gotek (FlashFloppy)<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The following configuration file is designed for the BBC Micro.
