{"id":39229,"date":"2026-05-15T20:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/?p=39229"},"modified":"2026-06-08T17:17:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-08T15:17:11","slug":"tecra-8100","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/en\/tecra-8100\/","title":{"rendered":"Tecra 8100 [Toshiba]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tecra 8100 fully kitted out \u2013 business laptop becomes a Windows 98 gaming machine<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Sometimes just the right item turns up in the collection: in this case, a <strong>Toshiba Tecra 8100 (PT810E-029F1-TK)<\/strong> including a <strong>10\/100 network port replicator<\/strong>, <strong>Expansion Station<\/strong>, several <strong>SelectBay drives<\/strong>, an external 3.5\u2033 floppy drive, a USB keyboard, <strong>Monitor Stand PA3021U-1OTA<\/strong> and a Xircom network card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">This means that virtually the entire range of docking stations and accessories that Toshiba offered its business customers around the year 2000 is now available. With <strong>512 MB RAM<\/strong> and <strong>Windows 98 SE<\/strong>, this provides the ideal foundation for a typical <strong>Win98 gaming PC from the turn of the millennium<\/strong> \u2013 only in notebook form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Toshiba Tecra 8100 \u2013 high-end business class around 2000<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The <strong>Tecra 8100 series<\/strong> was launched around the year 2000 as a high-end business notebook. Toshiba opted for <strong>Mobile Pentium III<\/strong> processors with SpeedStep, running at between 500 and 800 MHz depending on the model, combined with 13.3\u2033 or 14.1\u2033 TFT screens with a resolution of 1024\u00d7768. It adds extra ports to the notebook and provides the basis for desktop use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Typically, the following are available:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">built-in <strong>10\/100 Mbps Ethernet interface<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>VGA output<\/strong> for an external monitor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">additional <strong>USB, serial and parallel interfaces<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Audio ports and, of course, the standard docking connector for the Tecra 8100<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The device also features a <strong>Xircom CreditCard Ethernet 10\/100-Upgradeable (CE3-10\/100)<\/strong> in the PCMCIA slot. It connects to the port replicator via a special cable and offers its own expansion options in a desktop format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Key features:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>2 PCI slots<\/strong> (one half-length slot, one three-quarter-length slot)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>1\u00d7 3.5\u2033 drive bay<\/strong> \u2013 for example, for an IDE hard drive as a data drive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>1\u00d7 5.25\u2033 bay<\/strong> \u2013 suitable for a CD\/DVD drive or a removable tray, for example<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">its own <strong>EIDE controller<\/strong> and a separate power supply<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This allows standard desktop hardware to be connected to the laptop. Listed under the model number <strong>PA3021U-1OTR\/10TR<\/strong>, this stand is documented as an accessory for the Tecra 8100 and is listed in the official Toshiba price guide as the <strong>\u201cDark Grey Monitor Stand\u201d<\/strong>, i.e. a monitor stand specifically designed for this platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally, the stand was intended to,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">position a <strong>CRT or early LCD monitor<\/strong> at an ergonomic height<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">including space for the <strong>Port Replicator and\/or Expansion Station<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>bundle cables and accessories neatly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the Tecra, port replicator, expansion station and monitor stand, you get a very compact, cohesive-looking workstation: the docking\/expansion unit at the bottom, the external monitor above it, and the keyboard and mouse alongside. This is exactly what many \u2018standard workstations\u2019 in offices looked like around the year 2000 \u2013 except that here, there\u2019s the added retro gaming factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The price is also worth noting: in the British price guide from April 2001, the monitor stand is listed under the reference <strong>PA3021U-1OTR<\/strong> with a typical retail price of <strong>\u00a3355 (excl. Depending on requirements, various modules could be installed: optical drives, ZIP drives, additional hard drives or spare batteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This package contains several SelectBay modules:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Toshiba SelectBay ZIP 100 (Part 2793002)<\/strong> \u2013 an internal ZIP 100 drive in the special SelectBay form factor. With a suitable adapter, they could also be installed in the 5.25-inch bay of the Expansion Station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong>External floppy disk drive &amp; keyboard<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">As the Tecra 8100 does not have a built-in 3.5-inch floppy disk drive, Toshiba opted for an <strong>external 3.5-inch FDD housed in what is known as an FDD attachment case<\/strong>. The keyboard features the standard 104-key layout typical of that era and rounds out the external monitor workstation setup. Depending on the configuration, the prices listed in the price guide ranged from approximately <strong>\u00a31,800 to \u00a32,300<\/strong> (excluding VAT). For the German market, this translated\u2014depending on the exchange rate\u2014to typical prices in the range of several thousand Deutsche Marks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The modular docking solution\u2014comprising a port replicator, expansion station, and monitor stand\u2014added several hundred pounds to the cost; the PA3021U-1OTR monitor stand alone is listed at <strong>\u00a3355<\/strong> (plus VAT).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">In return, Toshiba offered a platform where power supplies, docking stations, and accessories remained compatible across multiple generations of devices. From the perspective of large IT departments, this <strong>\"Common Platform\" strategy<\/strong> was a key selling point and contributed to the market success of the Tecra series.
