So, it\u2019s time to take a closer look at this powerful tool for the C64\u2014and introduce it to you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What's inside? \ud83d\udcbe<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The Power Cartridge is an all-in-one solution for the C64\u2014featuring a BASIC toolkit, fast loaders for disk (6x) and cassette (10x), a machine-language monitor, a freezer, function key assignments, printer tools (including a hardcopy function), and a backup system. It was developed by <strong>Kolf Computer Supplies (KCS)<\/strong> in the Netherlands. The developers behind the cartridge were: <strong>Peter Verhey, Krijn Kolff, Bas van Rossem, and Paul Hopper<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The embedded operating system occupies 16 KB and does not simply reside on an EPROM; KCS incorporated additional components to enable its functionality. The labels on the chips were removed, and the address lines were deliberately \"scrambled\" to hinder reverse engineering. Consequently, an EPROM dump yields no readable code\u2014KCS evidently sought to protect its technology thoroughly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Power-Cartridge.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2919\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Power-Cartridge.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Power-Cartridge-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Power Cartridge C64<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BASIC-Toolkit \ud83e\uddee<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Power Cartridge extends the BASIC command set with many useful commands. Some highlights:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>INFO<\/strong> \u2013 displays all advanced commands<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>TRACE<\/strong> \u2013 analyzes the execution of a BASIC program line by line.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">RENUM, MERGE, DLOAD, DSAVE, HEX$, DOKE, DEEK, AUDIO, PSET, UNNEW, and many more!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially in the 80s, when many of us were programming in BASIC ourselves, this was an enormous help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">F-Key Mapping \u2328\ufe0f<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Die Funktionstasten wurden praxisnah vorbelegt:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>F1<\/strong> = LIST:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>F3<\/strong> = RUN:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>F5<\/strong> = DLOAD:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>F7<\/strong> = DIR:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>F2<\/strong> = Monitor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>F4<\/strong> = UNNEW:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>F6<\/strong> = LOAD&#8221;&#8221;,2<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>F8<\/strong> = DISK<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This allowed for lightning-fast switching between functions\u2014ideal for everyday use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Monitor \ud83d\udee0\ufe0f<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The integrated machine-language monitor is comprehensive: assembler, disassembler, memory viewer, comparison tools, jump commands, register display, load\/save functions\u2014it\u2019s all there. However: every time you make an input error, an annoying beep sounds. \ud83d\ude05 Unfortunately, this cannot be disabled, and after a while, it starts to get on your nerves.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/C64-Screen.jpg\" alt=\"Commodore 64 Screen mit Power Cartridge\" class=\"wp-image-2914\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/C64-Screen.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/C64-Screen-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Commodore 64 Screen mit Power Cartridge<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Freezer &amp; Backup Function \u2744\ufe0f<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The Freezer was one of its particular strengths. Programs could be frozen, saved, and resumed later\u2014theoretically. In practice, however, the success rate was not quite as high as with, for example, the <strong>Action Replay<\/strong>. This was primarily due to the limited RAM capacity and the necessity of compressing and decompressing the saved states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The snapshot saves three files to disk, typically:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>80  \"BACKUP#\"      USR  \n6   \"BACKUP$\"      USR  \n80  \"BACKUP%\"      USR\n<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">One disadvantage: to launch a frozen program, the Power Cartridge must be inserted. Furthermore, no special startup file is generated\u2014**BLOAD** is required; **DLOAD** will not recognize it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hardware &amp; Variants \ud83d\udca1<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The cartridge was first released in <strong>1986<\/strong>, although the ROM itself displays \"1985\" on the title screen. The cartridge remained on sale in Europe for over six years\u2014yet was never officially available in the USA. A later version from <strong>1989<\/strong> featured slightly revised title graphics and copyright notices, but no functional differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interestingly, KCS even left space on the PCB for an ON\/OFF switch and a reset button. The reset function was already accessible via a button\u2014a clear plus point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Manuals &amp; Language Versions \ud83d\udcda<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The situation regarding the manual is somewhat curious: the versions I am aware of are mostly bilingual (German\/Italian or Dutch\/French). Often, an **English cheat sheet** can be found on the back cover, even though a complete English manual apparently never existed. A rumored version featuring an English cover image (depicting lightning bolts striking the cartridge) has not yet been reliably documented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Personal Retrospective \ud83d\udd0d<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back then, a few friends of mine had this cartridge\u2014and I was pretty envious. I was particularly impressed by the fast loading and the extra commands. However, I didn't actually buy one for myself until much later. Nevertheless, the Power Cartridge remains a true piece of C64 history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It sits in my collection in its striking red case, serving as a symbol of KCS\u2019s practical, somewhat no-nonsense approach: no gimmicks\u2014just a true workhorse with a clear objective: to make everyday life on the C64 easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion \u2705<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The <strong>KCS Power Cartridge<\/strong> was a valuable tool for programmers, hobbyists, and power users. Even though it was later eclipsed by more powerful cartridges like the <strong>Action Replay<\/strong> or <strong>Final Cartridge III<\/strong>, it had its strengths: an extensive BASIC toolkit, a usable monitor, and ease of use.
