During this time, the US company Tiger Electronics gained widespread recognition for its LCD handheld games. Founded in 1978 by Randy Rissman and Roger Shiffman, Tiger Electronics initially started out with educational computers and electronic toys. With the introduction of its LCD handhelds, the company became synonymous with affordable, on-the-go gaming.

Tiger Handhelds: Simple but effective

Tiger LCD handheld games—the first of which appeared in 1987—were compact, battery-operated devices, with each unit designed for a single game. The screens were static, featuring fixed elements that were animated by illuminating specific areas of the LCD. Despite their simplicity, they had enormous appeal, especially through the licensing of well-known brands such as Jurassic Park, Power Rangers or Street Fighter. These licenses made Tiger handhelds particularly popular among children and young people.

The hardware of the handhelds was minimalist. Each device contained specific chips programmed for a single game. Typical technical features of the Tiger handhelds were:

CPU: Simple 4-bit microcontrollers from companies such as Sharp or NEC are often used.

Memory: The memory was integrated and contained the game logic as well as the instructions for the display.

Note: The LCDs were monochrome and did not offer pixel graphics in the modern sense. Instead, the “animation” consisted of pre-defined elements that were illuminated in sequence.

Sound: A simple piezo speaker provided beeping sound effects that supported the gameplay.

This simple technology made the handhelds affordable and accessible to many families.

Four classics from my collection

Paperboy (1988)

This game is based on the classic Atari arcade title. You take on the role of a paperboy who must deliver newspapers to customers' doorsteps while dodging obstacles such as dogs and cars. Despite its limited visuals, the game successfully captures the chaotic charm of the original.

Paperboy

Ispettore Gadget (1992)

Inspired by the animated series of the same name, this game lets you step into the shoes of the clumsy inspector. Using his iconic gadgets—such as the helicopter hat and the extendable arm—you battle Dr. Claw's henchmen. For fans of the series, this game is a real highlight. This appears to be the Italian version, as the game is otherwise known simply as *Inspector Gadget*.

Spettore Gadget

Hang-On (1989)

Based on Sega's motorcycle racing game, this handheld brings the thrill of racing to you in a compact format. The goal is to reach the finish line within a time limit while dodging other riders. Speed is simulated through rapid sequences of static LCD elements—a simple yet effective concept.

Hang-On

Star Wars: Imperial Assault (1997)

In diesem Spiel trittst du gegen die Streitkräfte des Imperiums an. At their core was a microcontroller that managed the game mechanics and controlled the LCD elements. Since each device contained only a single game, the hardware was specifically tailored to optimally support that particular gaming experience. Although the screens had limitations, they offered enough detail to depict iconic characters and scenes. The components' minimal power consumption meant the devices required few batteries and could be played for many hours.

Legacy

With the advent of modern handheld consoles like the Game Boy, Tiger LCD games lost their popularity. Nevertheless, they left a lasting impression on millions of players worldwide. Today, they are sought-after collector's items and offer a fascinating glimpse into the history of portable gaming. For retro enthusiasts like me, they are an essential part of any collection.

Do you have any personal memories of Tiger handhelds?
