There are announcements that come to nothing, and there are surprises that appear out of the blue \u2013 like the ZX Touch. As an old-school Sinclair fan, I often buy new hardware without giving it much thought. In this case, however, I was a bit hesitant, as the device has been on the market since December 2023. Ultimately, I was won over by the positive reviews and the current extras (as of November 2024): an acrylic display stand and a carry case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The handheld is manufactured by Elmar Electronics, the company that previously developed the ZX-VGA-JOY (a VGA adapter for the Sinclair ZX Spectrum). Distribution is once again being handled by Sintech<\/a> in Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As early as 2018, there was an attempt to launch a handheld console (Vega+) featuring Sinclair games. More than \u00a3500,000 was raised from 4,700 backers via the crowdfunding platform Indiegogo. However, as many promises were not kept and no finished product was released, the campaign was eventually cancelled and the backers were reimbursed \u2013 where possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

With the ZX Touch, however, the situation is quite different: no announcements were made so as not to create any pressure, and no money was taken up front. The device was fully pre-funded, is physically available and costs \u20ac238.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The device is equipped with a 480 MHz ARM Cortex-MZ processor and features a 7-inch IPS touchscreen with a resolution of 1024 \u00d7 600 pixels. The package includes a USB-C to USB-A adapter and a USB-C cable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When unboxing the ZX Touch, its size immediately catches the eye; it is roughly the same size as a Nintendo Switch. The large touchscreen (7-inch IPS, 1024 \u00d7 600 pixels) is set within a dark grey casing. There are eight buttons on either side of the display, and an analogue joystick on the left-hand side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The power button is located on the top right-hand side of the device. On the underside, you\u2019ll find a USB-C port, a microSD slot and a 3.5 mm jack for headphones or speakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The top and bottom of the housing are joined by an acrylic layer containing integrated LEDs. These light up when the device is in use, creating a distinctive visual effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
