{"id":33967,"date":"2025-02-21T20:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-02-21T19:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/?p=33967"},"modified":"2026-06-03T11:27:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T09:27:08","slug":"apf-02-usb-card-reader-atari-portfolio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/en\/apf-02-usb-card-reader-atari-portfolio\/","title":{"rendered":"APF-02 USB-Card-Reader [Atari Portfolio]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Following the recently introduced <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/en\/apf-01-memory-card-atari-portfolio\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/apf-01-memory-card-atari-portfolio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">APF-01<\/a><\/strong>, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/apfram.com\/#apf02\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/apfram.com\/#apf02\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">APF-02 USB Card Reader<\/a><\/strong> has now arrived\u2014an exciting new piece of hardware that allows classic Atari Portfolio memory cards (32K, 64K, and 128K) to be read directly on a PC.<br><br>Previously, in my opinion, this was only possible using the <strong>Atari PC Card Drive<\/strong>, a specialized piece of hardware connected via an ISA card in a DOS-based PC. However, this setup is hardly practical nowadays, as the necessary PCs are no longer widely available. The APF-02 fills this gap, solving one of the key challenges that many Portfolio users still face today: <strong>How do I get software onto the Portfolio?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong>A Look Back: Previous Solutions<\/strong><br><br>In earlier articles, I have already presented several methods for exchanging data between the Atari Portfolio and modern systems:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/en\/retro-atari-portfolio-tips-tricks-datenubertragung\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/retro-atari-portfolio-tips-tricks-datenubertragung\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Parallel interface<\/a><\/strong>: Connection via a suitable cable and a PC<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/en\/retro-atari-portfolio-und-iomega-zip-laufwerk\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/retro-atari-portfolio-und-iomega-zip-laufwerk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zip drive<\/a><\/strong>: A solution that was often cumbersome but functional.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/en\/pc-card-drive\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/pc-card-drive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PC Card Drive<\/a><\/strong>: The original solution from Atari\u2014now a rarity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/en\/cf-adapter-u-a-atari-portfolio\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/cf-adapter-u-a-atari-portfolio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CF adapter<\/a><\/strong>: A more modern alternative<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The <strong>APF-01<\/strong> already introduced a major innovation by offering a memory card with a capacity of up to <strong>2 MB<\/strong>. To read and write cards, you need at least <strong>version 2.0<\/strong> of the tool, which is available on the <strong>apfRAM<\/strong> website. You can also order the hardware itself there\u2014the price is approximately <strong>70 euros<\/strong>, plus shipping from Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Using the software is no different from using the <strong>APF-01<\/strong>. If you\u2019ve read my review of that, you\u2019ll quickly find your way around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The heart of this hardware is a Xilinx CPLD (Complex Programmable Logic Device) designated R3064XL. In my case, the APF-02 was detected, but the Pofo's memory card was not. At first, I thought this might be due to the weak battery. However, even after replacing the battery and formatting the memory card, it still didn't work.<br>When I tested a different micro-USB cable, the memory card was finally detected.
