I first wrote about the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/en\/retro-mist-news-072014\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MiST<\/a> (Minimig Atari ST)<\/strong>\u2014the predecessor to the MiSTer\u2014on my blog back in 2014. This original device supported numerous cores that enabled hardware-accurate emulation of retro systems. I followed the development of the MiST for many years. However, as is often the case with technology, the device underwent further development and improvement. This led to the creation of the <strong>MiSTer<\/strong>, which is based on the <strong>DE10-Nano board<\/strong> from Terasic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The basic functions of the MiSTer are complemented by several expansions\u2014so-called daughterboards\u2014such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>SDRAM board<\/strong>: required for many cores to meet additional memory requirements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>I\/O board<\/strong>: offers various outputs such as VGA, analog audio, optical audio, buttons, and LEDs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>RTC board<\/strong> (optional): adds a real-time clock.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>USB hub board<\/strong>: expands the USB ports for controllers, keyboards, or other devices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Availability and price trends<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">In recent years, the availability of the MiSTer has deteriorated significantly, and costs have risen as well. The DE10-Nano board, which is equipped with an <strong>Intel Cyclone V FPGA<\/strong>, was originally developed by Intel (following its acquisition of the original manufacturer, Altera, in 2015) as a cost-effective solution for educational institutions. Intel had subsidized the boards to encourage their adoption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">In 2022, this \"subsidy\" ended, causing the price of the DE10-Nano board to rise from around \u20ac130 to as much as \u20ac300. This also significantly increased the total cost of a MiSTer setup. Fortunately, there is now a more affordable alternative: the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/retroremake.co\/pages\/store\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/retroremake.co\/pages\/store\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MiSTer Pi<\/a><\/strong>, which uses a compatible board and lowers production costs. As a result, the price of a complete package is now only around \u20ac180\u2014a welcome development for retro gaming fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/MisterX-mini-Oberseite-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"MisterX mini\" class=\"wp-image-37128\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">MisterX mini<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A special MiSTer from Spain<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The device presented here comes from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/antoniovillena.com\/product\/complete-mister-mini\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/antoniovillena.com\/product\/complete-mister-mini\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Antonio Villena<\/a><\/strong>, a developer from Spain who is also known for the <strong>ZX-Uno<\/strong>. His MiSTer package costs around \u20ac350 and comes in an extremely compact and visually appealing case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The housing with a transparent top contains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">An I\/O board with <strong>R-2R DAC<\/strong> (VGA output),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An audio DAC with a 112dB signal-to-noise ratio (analog and optical),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\">A <strong>DB-9 Joystick Connector<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Illuminated pushbuttons for operation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A suitable power supply is also included. It allows you to configure numerous options and download all necessary data directly to the SD card. A particularly handy feature is that the SD card can be easily populated and managed using an FTP program (such as <strong>FileZilla<\/strong>). This eliminates the need to constantly remove the card to work on it via a PC card reader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">In your FTP program, simply enter the IP address of the MiSTer, use <strong>user \"root\"<\/strong> and <strong>password \"1\"<\/strong>. Important: specify <strong><code>\/media\/fat\/<\/code><\/strong> as the target directory \u2013 that's the central folder on the SD card where everything important is located. This lets you quickly transfer new games, BIOS files, or entire folder structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">MiSTer and NAS<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">If there are multiple MiSTer devices in the household, a <strong>central data store on a NAS<\/strong> is a good option. This way, you do not have to maintain two SD cards with identical content. Games and other content are loaded directly from the NAS. It only worked when an Ethernet cable was also connected\u2014a strange quirk. Longer load times for larger games also count against this solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">No matter what I tried\u2014static IP addresses, alternative settings, network adjustments\u2014<strong>no improvement<\/strong>. When it works, it\u2019s great\u2014but in my case, it actually made daily life more complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/MisterX-mini-in-Betrieb-2-e1748770807703-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-37143\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/MisterX-mini-in-Betrieb-2-e1748770807703-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/MisterX-mini-in-Betrieb-2-e1748770807703-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/MisterX-mini-in-Betrieb-2-e1748770807703.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alternative: External hard drive<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">If you are genuinely running out of storage space, you can simply connect an <strong>external USB hard drive<\/strong> instead. Move the <strong>\"Games\"<\/strong> folder, and MiSTer will correctly recognize it in the new location\u2014without needing to go through the network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Controller<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">I am currently using the wired <strong>8BitDo M30<\/strong> \u2013 a great controller with a classic layout. It can be configured in the MiSTer settings and also used to navigate the menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong> When launching a new core for the first time, configure the most important settings\u2014such as controller mapping\u2014right away and save them immediately. Despite rising costs and a somewhat more involved setup process, the MiSTer remains an indispensable tool for retro enthusiasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With devices like the MiSTer Pi or custom solutions from developers such as Antonio Villena, more affordable or compact alternatives are now available.
