The APF-01 card is a plug-in module for the Atari Portfolio, available in capacities starting at 512KB from apfram.com<\/a>. I purchased the 1MB version, which currently costs $119 plus shipping. The module comes with an A4 sheet that contains no information other than a few notes on safe and proper use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The contacts used to insert the module into the slot on the left side of the Atari Portfolio are located on one side. On the opposite side, there is a mini-USB port for the included short cable. A small switch is positioned next to it.
A significant advantage of this card is that it does not require a battery\u2014the manufacturer guarantees data retention for 150 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few years ago, I published a short article about using the original memory cards with the PC-Card-Drive<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As with other cards, the APF-01 should not be inserted into a Portfolio that is switched on. But how is data transferred to the APF-01?<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

To use it, you need the \u201capfRam Utility for Windows \u2013 v2.1\u201d from the provider\u2019s website, which is available in the download section. Unfortunately, there is no corresponding software for Apple or Linux. No drivers need to be installed; simply running the downloaded EXE file is sufficient.<\/p>\n\n\n

My card was then identified as \u201c1MB apfRAM card v1.2\u201d. The available commands, which resemble DOS commands, can be displayed using the \u201chelp\u201d command. There are only two commands for data transfer between the PC and the card: \u201cupload\u201d and \u201cdownload\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Copying entire directories is not possible. First, a directory must be created (on the PoFo or the PC), and then the data can be transferred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meine Methode besteht darin, mit “md” ein Verzeichnis zu erstellen und anschlie\u00dfend die Daten hochzuladen. Trotz Berichten in Foren \u00fcber Probleme bei der Erstellung von Verzeichnissen auf dem PC habe ich keine Schwierigkeiten festgestellt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Version 3 of the software introduces the \u201cuploadfolder\u201d command. This allows a folder\u2014including all its files and subfolders\u2014to be copied from the PC to the folder selected on the APF-01. Please note that file and folder names must comply with the 8.3 naming convention, as required by the Portfolio. Do not use long file names!<\/p>\n\n\n
