The main rival to Sinclair, the BBC Micro Model B was developed by Acorn under the leadership of Tim Curry, a former Sinclair employee, and dominated the market for school computers in England. It used the same chip as the C64, but the BBC stood out for its high level of expandability.

Company history
Chris Curry joined Sinclair Radionics (1976) and was encouraged by Sir Clive Sinclair to co-found the company Science of Cambridge (Soc). In 1978, SoC began selling a microcomputer kit – the MK14 – but failed to secure the desired further development from Sinclair.
In 1978, Curry and Hermann Hauser (a lecturer at Cambridge University) founded the company Cambridge Processor Unit (CPU). In 1979, Acorn Computer Ltd was founded and began developing a 6502-based microcomputer. CPU founded Orbis Ltd. together with Andy Hopper. Following disagreements with Sinclair, Curry left SoC.

The Acorn System 1 was designed by Sophie Wilson, cost 80 pounds and consisted of two circuit boards. This was followed by the expanded and improved System 2, 3, 4 and System 5 (6502 chip running at 2 MHz).
In 1979, SoC began developing the Sinclair ZX80, which prompted Tim Curry to launch the Atom project. He developed the machine in collaboration with Nick Toop. A casing was designed for this purpose, and components from an Acorn System 3 were fitted. The Atom was a relatively successful project.
Subsequently, the decision was made not to move to 16-bit technology just yet, but to design a highly expandable 8-bit computer. One of these expansions was the Tube, an interface capable of integrating a second processor. The Tube was intended to handle the calculations, whilst the 6502 would be responsible for data input and output.

Acorn BBC Micro Model B – circuit board

Großen Einfluss hatte die Dokumentation The Mighty Micro in der die bevorstehende Revolution des Microcomputer beschrieben wird.
