{"id":13544,"date":"2017-04-02T14:45:12","date_gmt":"2017-04-02T13:45:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/?p=13544"},"modified":"2026-06-03T12:38:48","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T10:38:48","slug":"ddi3-usb-floppy-emulator-schneider-cpc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/en\/ddi3-usb-floppy-emulator-schneider-cpc\/","title":{"rendered":"DDI3 USB Floppy Emulator [Schneider CPC]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">Having already introduced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/en\/ddi-1-interface-schneider-cpc\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"10648\" target=\"_self\">DDI-1<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/en\/ddi-1-2014-retro-schneider-cpc\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"9519\" target=\"_self\">DDI-1 2014<\/a>, there is now news regarding floppy disk hardware and the <em>Schneider CPC<\/em>. Just like the <em>DDI-1 2014<\/em>, this new interface was designed by the versatile developer <em>Zaxon<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">The <em>DDI3<\/em> is a combination of <em>DDI-1<\/em> and <em>HXC interface<\/em>. To use floppy disks on the <em>CPC464<\/em>, a <em>DDI-1 interface<\/em> and an FD1 drive were previously required. However, the DDI-1 is difficult to obtain, and\u2014in addition\u2014either a compatible floppy drive or an HXC unit is needed as a substitute. This hurdle is now a thing of the past \u2013 the <em>DDI3<\/em> can replace all of that (you only need a USB stick for the data).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While this interface is not the smallest device, it impresses with its well-thought-out design. It features several buttons and switches, an LCD for simplified navigation, and a port for an additional floppy disk drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The package I received contained the interface and a USB stick (which was already prepared for use). If you did not order a USB stick from <em>Zaxon <\/em>, you will need to prepare one yourself. However, this process is exactly the same as it is for an <em>HXC <\/em> or <em>Gotek drive <\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-13656\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ddi3-display-1.jpg\" alt=\"DDI3 - Display\" class=\"wp-image-13656\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ddi3-display-1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ddi3-display-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">DDI3 &#8211; Display<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">For me, one of the most interesting features:<br>I have a large stack of 3-inch floppy disks that I would like to archive. With the DDI3, this is now quite simple. You connect an FD-1 drive to the DDI3, create a few empty disk images on the USB stick, and copy the disks using Parados!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What happened to me during that?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"translation-block\">Initially, I simply connected the FD-1 drive. While this allowed me to access the floppy disk in Drive B, the DDI3 continued to display \"No USB Stick.\" It is, therefore, indeed necessary to modify the floppy cable used to connect the FD-1 to the DDI3. As described on Zaxon's <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eightbitclone.com\/ddi3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website<\/a>, line number 10 must be cut. Afterward, accessing both drives works without any issues.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-13657\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ddi3-modifikation-floppykabel-1.jpg\" alt=\"DDI3 - Modifikation Floppykabel\" class=\"wp-image-13657\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ddi3-modifikation-floppykabel-1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ddi3-modifikation-floppykabel-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">DDI3 \u2013 modification floppy cable<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">2. For copying, <em>Parados<\/em>, which is integrated into <em>DDI3<\/em>, can be used.<br>Unfortunately, <em>Parados<\/em> could not be activated for me with the command <code>|drive<\/code>. \ud83d\ude42 The reason for this lies in the Vortex memory expansion installed in my CPC\u2014specifically, a portion of the expansion must first be disabled using the <code>|DISBOS<\/code> command.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-13659\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ddi3-zusammen-mit-fd1-und-parados-1.jpg\" alt=\"DDI3 zusammen mit FD1 und ParaDOS\" class=\"wp-image-13659\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ddi3-zusammen-mit-fd1-und-parados-1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.jungsi.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ddi3-zusammen-mit-fd1-und-parados-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">DDI3 zusammen mit FD1 und ParaDOS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong>3. Parados<\/strong><br>Before use, it is worth taking a quick look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpcwiki.eu\/imgs\/0\/0d\/Parados.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">manual<\/a>. In my case, the settings for Drive B were incorrect (80 tracks\/DD).<br>These can be adjusted to 40 tracks\/SS by pressing <code>SHIFT+C<\/code>, followed by <code>D<\/code>. Pressing <code>SHIFT+L<\/code> \"logs\" a floppy disk\u2014that is, its contents are displayed. Subsequently, the files you wish to copy can be marked using <code>T<\/code> (Tag). To mark all files at once, use <code>CTRL+T<\/code>. Once everything is selected, the marked files can be copied using <code>CTRL+C<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\"><strong>4. Firmware Update (2024)<\/strong><br>Hard to believe, but after a long hiatus, I used the interface again and decided to check if there was any new firmware available. Since the DDI3 is essentially an HxC drive, surely there ought to be something to be found. Indeed, on the <a href=\"https:\/\/hxc2001.com\/download\/floppy_drive_emulator\/\" target=\"_self\">HxC homepage<\/a>, there is a download link as well as instructions for the update.<br>In the final section of the page: <br><em>USB Stick STM32 HxC Floppy Emulator (HxC Firmware for Gotek)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph translation-block\">I used the file from the following subfolder within the download:<br><code>\/Firmware_Updates\/Generic_Gotek\/Standard_Firmware\/*.upd<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I simply copied this file to the USB stick I use with my DDI3. Then, I plugged in the stick and held down both navigation buttons while turning on the CPC.
