Der erste Computer der Schneider CPC-Serie, der CPC464, hatte lediglich ein internes Kassettenlaufwerk. Dies war zwar praktisch und kosteng\u00fcnstig, jedoch auch recht langsam. Aus diesem Grund wurde ab 1985 das Schneider DDI-1 angeboten. Um genauer zu sein, das DDI-1 ist eine Kombination aus einem Interface und einem Diskettenlaufwerk. Im Lieferumfang enthalten war stets eine Systemdiskette – auf Seite A CP\/M und auf Seite B Dr. LOGO. Das Diskettenlaufwerk, das FD-1, konnte sp\u00e4ter auch als Zusatzlaufwerk f\u00fcr den CPC664 und CPC6128 gekauft werden. Das FD-1 ist also ein „dummes“ Laufwerk, das nur mit einem passenden Controller funktioniert.
Das FD-1 verf\u00fcgt \u00fcber ein eigenes Netzteil und versorgt zusammen mit dem DDI-1 auch dieses mit Strom. \u00c4hnlich wie die internen Laufwerke des CPC664 und CPC6128 ist das FD-1 ein 3-Zoll-Laufwerk mit nur einem Schreib-\/Lesekopf, was bedeutet, dass jeweils nur eine Seite der Diskette beschrieben oder gelesen werden kann. Es hat eine Kapazit\u00e4t von 180 KByte, und die Disketten k\u00f6nnen gewendet werden, um beide Seiten nutzen zu k\u00f6nnen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The floppy disk drives were configured to respond to both drive select lines, A: and B:. The cable determined which drive functioned as A: and which as B:. On the CPC664 and CPC6128 models, DRIVE SELECT 0 was not connected to the external connector, meaning that external drives could only be set up as B:.
On the DDI-1, DRIVE SELECT 0 was connected only to the last connector on the cable, whilst the inner connector was connected exclusively to DRIVE SELECT 1. Consequently, the drive at the end of the cable was always drive A:, and the other drive was always B:.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most common fault I\u2019ve encountered with drives was a broken drive belt \u2013 even when they still looked intact. However, these are easy to source on eBay. On one of my drives, the read\/write head was misaligned, but I managed to fix it after a bit of fiddling around. Sobald das Interface mit dem CPC464 verbunden ist, gelten alle Befehle, die zuvor f\u00fcr das Kassettenlaufwerk bestimmt waren, nun f\u00fcr das Diskettenlaufwerk.

Um zwischen Kassette und Diskette zu wechseln, verwendet man den Befehl |tape f\u00fcr die Kassette und |disc, um zur Diskette zur\u00fcckzukehren.<\/p>\n\n\n

Formatting a floppy disk<\/strong>
Unfortunately, the process is a bit cumbersome, as you always need the CP\/M floppy disk supplied with the system. This must be inserted into drive A and then started with |CPM. This transfers control from AMSDOS to the CP\/M operating system. Then simply enter the command format and follow the on-screen instructions. To exit CP\/M, type amsdos. Note that the format command saves CP\/M to tracks 0 and 1, which wastes space. Therefore, for AMSDOS floppy disks, the command format d should be used to utilise tracks 0 and 1 as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last option also allows you to make a copy of the CP\/M disk itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In CP\/M, the command `em`filecopy <\/em> can be used, amongst other things, to copy files, and wildcards are supported here. All CP\/M commands can be cancelled using CTRL+C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
