The small, flat devices\u2014often designed to match the licensed game\u2014featured simple, single-line LCD animations on a static background. Technically, they were extremely simple and a far cry from real video games, but their low price and the licensing of popular titles like Sonic the Hedgehog, Batman, and Mortal Kombat made them highly sought-after Christmas gifts.
