Der Dreamcast war Segas letzter gro\u00dfer Versuch \u2014 und in vielerlei Hinsicht seiner Zeit voraus. Als erste Konsole mit eingebautem Modem und Online-Spielf\u00e4higkeit ab 1998 skizzierte er eine Zukunft des vernetzten Gamings, die erst Jahre sp\u00e4ter Realit\u00e4t wurde. Das Ger\u00e4t startete stark: Die Hardware war leistungsf\u00e4hig, die Spielebibliothek \u00fcberzeugte von Beginn an mit Titeln wie Sonic Adventure, Shenmue und dem weltweit ersten offiziellen Online-Rollenspiel Phantasy Star Online. Doch der Schatten von Sonys PlayStation 2-Ank\u00fcndigung und das mangelnde Vertrauen der Verbraucher nach dem Saturn-Desaster setzten dem Dreamcast fr\u00fch zu. 2001 stellte Sega die Produktion ein und zog sich aus dem Konsolengesch\u00e4ft zur\u00fcck \u2014 ein Ende, das viele Fans bis heute bedauern.
