Als Microsoft 2001 in Nordamerika mit der Xbox den Sprung in den Konsolenmarkt wagte, erntete das Unternehmen zun\u00e4chst viel Skepsis. Ein PC-Hersteller als Konsolenbauer \u2014 das hatten viele nicht kommen sehen. Doch Microsoft brachte echte St\u00e4rken mit: Die Xbox war technisch die leistungsf\u00e4higste Konsole ihrer Generation, besa\u00df als erste Heimkonsole eine eingebaute Festplatte und einen Ethernet-Anschluss f\u00fcr Online-Gaming. Mit Xbox Live etablierte Microsoft 2002 einen Online-Dienst, der den Standard f\u00fcr Multiplayer-Erlebnisse auf Konsolen neu setzte und bis heute Ma\u00dfst\u00e4be setzt. Der exklusive Halo-Shooter wurde zum Systemseller und zur Ikone eines ganzen Genres. Gegen die PlayStation 2 mit ihrer riesigen installierten Basis hatte die Xbox dennoch einen schweren Stand \u2014 rund 25 Millionen verkaufte Einheiten stehen \u00fcber 155 Millionen PS2-Konsolen gegen\u00fcber.
